MARLBOROUGH HISTORY

Marlborough Gallery was founded in London in 1946 by Frank Lloyd and Harry Fischer. During the 1950’s the gallery grew in prestige thanks to acclaimed exhibitions such as: Degas, Courbet, Gericault, Renoir, Monet, and Boudin to name a few. Marlborough was the first gallery to show works by the German Expressionists in London, organising shows such as “Art in Revolt” in 1959 and “Painters of the Bauhaus” in 1963. Marlborough developed an international clientele and embraced a new generation of post-World War II artists including Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, Victor Pasmore, Lucian Freud, Graham Sutherland and Ben Nicholson.

In 1960 a second gallery was opened in Rome, and in 1963 the New York gallery was founded. Marlborough’s international presence has expanded to include Marlborough Gallery Inc., New York; Marlborough Fine Art Ltd., London; Galeria Marlborough S.A. Madrid; Galeria A.M.S. Marlborough, Santiago; Marlborough Monaco and Marlborough Chelsea, New York.

Marlborough Gallery has represented such seminal artists as Jacques Lipchitz, Oskar Kokoschka, David Smith, Robert Motherwell, Philip Guston, Adolph Gottlieb and the estates of Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline. Today Marlborough continues to represent highly regarded artists of international acclaim including Magdalena Abakanowicz, Frank Auerbach, Fernando Botero, Claudio Bravo, Richard Estes, Red Grooms, Bill Jacklin, Tom Otterness, and Dale Chihuly.

Marlborough has based its success on the basic tenet that energy, perseverance, foresight, attention to detail, hard work and bold creative action work together to bear rewards. Throughout its 50-year history, Marlborough has assumed an international leadership role in the support, development and stabilization of an art as a cultural medium and viable market force.
